How we rank movers

We rate long-distance movers on the same five things, with checkable evidence preferred over vague "we move everywhere" claims. Each mover earns a CMR Score from 1 to 10, re-checked every 3–6 months, and only the picks that clear every area earn the CMR Certified Approved seal.

The seal goes only to movers that pass our review across all five areas — carrier status, service breadth, protection, pricing clarity, and customer feedback. It's a shortcut for "we'd be comfortable recommending this to a friend."

The four steps behind every score

Verify the carrier

We confirm active licensing and interstate authority (USDOT and MC numbers) and whether a company owns its trucks and crews or brokers the job out. Direct carriers earn more trust for the added accountability.

Map the services

Packing, crating, storage, auto transport, specialty and fragile handling — we weigh each mover's service breadth against the kinds of moves it actually takes on.

Pressure-test pricing

We favor binding and Not-To-Exceed estimates and pricing you can hold a mover to, and we flag practices like large upfront cash deposits that tend to signal trouble.

Read the feedback

We weigh verified customer experience and complaint history across reputable platforms — and how recent and steady that feedback is, not just the lifetime total.

Why recency matters, not just totals

We don't just count reviews — we look at how recent and how steady they are. A company coasting on years-old reviews can feel strong on paper but tell you little about how it performs today; one earning fresh, positive feedback week after week shows it's still doing right by customers. That freshness is one of the clearest signals of a mover's current quality, so it's part of how we weigh the customer-feedback area.
