Buyer's guide FAQ

Which guide should I start with?
Most readers start with Best Nationwide Movers, the flagship ranking of long-distance companies. If your move fits a specific situation, jump straight to the matching guide: cross-country for moves over 1,000 miles, storage if there is a gap between move-out and move-in, families, or fragile and specialty items.
How does CMR rank moving companies?
Every company is scored on the CMR Score, a 10-point editorial scale built from licensing and FMCSA records, complaint history, pricing transparency, service scope, and customer feedback. Rankings are editorial and are never sold. The full methodology is published on How We Rank Movers.
What is the difference between CMR Certified Approved and CMR Verified?
CMR Certified Approved is the highest tier, reserved for companies that pass the full certification review, including licensing, insurance, complaint history, and service verification. CMR Verified means core credentials such as USDOT and MC numbers have been confirmed, but the company has not completed the full certification process.
Are these guides updated for 2026?
Yes. The core rankings, including the nationwide, interstate, cross-country, and storage guides, are maintained on a rolling basis, with scores and rosters re-checked as company data changes. Each guide notes its own review cadence.
How much does a long-distance move cost in 2026?
Most full-service long-distance moves fall between $2,500 and $9,000 or more depending on distance, home size, and services. The free Moving Cost Calculator produces a personalized estimate, and every route page shows cost ranges by home size for that specific city pair.
